"Burst of Joy"
This black and white photograph was taken by Slava Veder on
March 17, 1973. “Sal” was a photographer for the Associated Press, and ended up
winning a Pultzer Prize for this Photograph.
After doing much research on this photograph I have found
out several very interesting facts that can explain the “burst of joy” shown in
this photograph. The man whose face is not shown is United States Air Force Lt.
Col. Robert L. Strim. Strim flew an F-105 bomber during the Vietnam War and was
shot down on October 27th, 1967. Strim was not released until
March 14th, 1973. It is pretty evident that the girl with her arms
wide open is the focal point of this photograph. She is Strim’s 15 year old
daughter and her name is Lorrie. This photograph can be the grand image for the
entire Vietnam War because is conveys so many emotions. It greatly expresses
the amount of happiness that the family is experiencing after their loved one
was held captive for over 5 years by the enemy.
